Miss it and the IRS charges 25% of what you didn’t take ($4,902), or 10% ($1,961) if you put it right within two years.

What this means

Your RMD is 3.9% of your balance. The IRS figure falls each year, so the share you have to take rises: 4.1% at 75, 5.0% at 80 and 8.2% at 90. RMDs are taxed as income, and taking more doesn’t lower future ones.

From 70½ you can give up to $111,000 a year (2026) straight from your IRA to charity. It counts toward your RMD and isn’t taxed.

Assumptions in this estimate
  • Uses the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table (Publication 590-B). If your spouse is more than 10 years younger and your only beneficiary, a different table gives a smaller RMD.
  • The years ahead assume 5% growth a year, with each RMD taken at the end of the year and nothing else taken out.
  • Inherited IRAs and plans follow different rules, often taking everything out within 10 years.
  • With more than one traditional IRA, work out each one’s RMD, then take the total from any of them.
