How the calculator works
- Each offer’s pay: salary plus any yearly bonus.
- Tax on each: the same rules as our income tax calculator: federal and provincial income tax, the Ontario Health Premium, and CPP and EI (QPP, QPIP and Quebec’s EI rate in Quebec).
- The difference: take-home pay for each offer, the difference a month and a year, and the tax lines that explain it.
- The salary that matches: the salary the second offer needs, in its own province and with its own bonus, to leave you with the same take-home pay as the first.
Why provinces matter
Federal tax is the same everywhere, but provincial tax isn’t. Alberta and Ontario charge less on most incomes than Quebec or Nova Scotia, so the same salary can leave you thousands of dollars a year apart. See all the rates in Canada tax brackets.
Living costs aren’t included. Once you know each offer’s take-home pay, compare it with what rent or a mortgage would cost in each city.
