Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between GST, HST and PST?

GST is the 5% federal tax charged across Canada. Five provinces combine it with their own tax into one harmonized sales tax (HST). British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec charge their own provincial tax (PST, RST or QST) separately, on top of the GST.

How do I calculate HST in Ontario?

Multiply the price by 1.13 to add Ontario's 13% HST. So $100 becomes $113. To remove it, divide by 1.13.

How is Quebec sales tax calculated?

Quebec charges the 5% GST and 9.975% QST, both on the price before tax, so 14.975% in total. On $100, that's $5 GST and $9.98 QST, for $114.98.

Which purchases have no GST or HST?

Some are zero-rated, so no GST or HST is charged, such as basic groceries, prescription drugs, certain medical devices and feminine hygiene products. Provincial sales taxes have their own exemptions.

When does a business have to register for GST/HST?

Once its taxable sales go over $30,000 in four calendar quarters in a row. Below that, it's a small supplier and doesn't have to register.
