What this means

Invested at 5% a year, $109,000 would grow to about $289,209 in 20 years, all of it tax-free.

Your exact room is in the CRA’s My Account. It can lag behind by a few months, so include anything you’ve put in or taken out this year.

How TFSA room works

  • You get new room every January, and unused room carries forward forever.
  • Money you take out is added back to your room the next January, not straight away.
  • Growth, interest and withdrawals are never taxed, and don’t affect benefits like OAS.
Assumptions in this estimate
  • Assumes you’ve been a resident of Canada with a social insurance number every year since you became eligible.
  • Transfers between your own TFSAs don’t count as contributions or withdrawals.

How the calculator works

  1. When you became eligible: the year you turned 18, or moved to Canada, whichever is later. Room starts in 2009 at the earliest.
  2. What you’ve put in: every contribution since you first opened a TFSA.
  3. Withdrawals: money taken out in earlier years is added back to your room.

Total room by starting year

You became eligible Room in 2026 (nothing put in yet)
2009 or earlier $109,000
2015 $78,000
2020 $45,500

Frequently asked questions

What is the TFSA limit for 2026?

$7,000. If you’ve been eligible since 2009 and never contributed, your total room in 2026 is $109,000.

When does withdrawn money come back?

On January 1 of the next year. Putting it back in the same year uses new room, and can lead to an over-contribution.

What happens if I put in too much?

You pay a tax of 1% a month on the extra until you take it out or new room covers it.

Where can I see my exact room?

In the CRA’s My Account, under RRSP and TFSA. It can be a few months behind, so allow for this year’s contributions and withdrawals.
