How income tax works in Canada

You pay two income taxes: federal tax, and tax to the province or territory you live in on December 31. Each has its own brackets, and each rate applies only to the part of your income in that bracket. Both also give non-refundable credits, such as the basic personal amount, which reduce your tax by the credit amount times the lowest rate.
