Working it out
- Adding GST: price × 1.1
- Removing GST: price ÷ 1.1
- The GST in a GST-inclusive price: price ÷ 11
A tax invoice shows the GST as exactly one eleventh of the total price, when every item on it includes GST.
Add 10% GST to a price, or work out how much GST is in a price that already includes it.
10% applies to most goods and services; most basic food and some health, education and childcare are GST-free.
Price with GST
$110.00
GST at 10%: $10.00
What this means
GST adds $10.00 to every $100.00 you spend. It’s the same rate whatever you earn, so it takes a bigger share of a smaller income.
Next step
| Price before GST | $100.00 |
| GST (10%) | $10.00 |
| Price with GST | $110.00 |

Multiply the price by 1.1. So $100 becomes $110.
Divide the GST-inclusive price by 11. So a $110 price includes $10 of GST, and $100 before GST. Don't just take 10% off, which would give $99, because GST is 10% of the price before GST, not of the total.
Some things have no GST, such as most basic food, some education courses, some medical, health and care products and services, and some childcare.
Once its GST turnover reaches $75,000 a year, or $150,000 for non-profits. Taxi and ride-sourcing drivers must register whatever their turnover.
