What this means

A pay gap always shrinks after tax, because the extra salary is taxed at your top rate. Compare offers on take-home pay, not the headline salary.

Take-home pay isn’t everything: also weigh the retirement contributions, health cover, time off, commute and living costs that come with each job.

Assumptions in this estimate
  • Both offers are worked out with 2026–27 tax rules for a single person, with no other income and no pre-tax deductions such as pension or retirement contributions.
  • Bonuses are taxed as part of your yearly pay. Tax taken from a bonus payment can be higher at first, but it evens out over the year or on your tax return.
  • The Offer B salary that matches A keeps Offer B’s location and bonus, and gives the same take-home pay as Offer A.
  • Living costs such as rent, and benefits such as health insurance, aren’t included. Compare those separately.
  • Super is 12% of your salary on top, or split out of the package when it’s included. The bonus is added on top of the salary.
  • Tax is worked out for the full year and spread evenly across your pays; the ATO tax tables used for withholding can differ by a few dollars a pay.
  • The Medicare levy low-income threshold is the 2025–26 figure ($28,011), which the ATO also uses for 2026–27 withholding.
  • Assumes a single person with no dependants; family thresholds for the Medicare levy and surcharge are not included.

How the calculator works

  1. Each offer’s pay: the salary, split into salary and super if the offer is a package including super, plus any yearly bonus.
  2. Tax on each: the same rules as our pay calculator: income tax with the low income tax offset, and the Medicare levy.
  3. The difference: take-home pay for each offer, the difference a month and a year, and the super your employer adds.
  4. The salary that matches: the salary or package the second offer needs to leave you with the same take-home pay as the first.

HELP repayments aren’t included. If you have a HELP debt, the pay calculator shows your repayments at each salary.

Frequently asked questions

Is $110,000 including super better than $100,000 plus super?

No. A $110,000 package including super is about $98,214 in salary plus $11,786 in super. After tax, it leaves about $76,266 a year, against $77,480 on $100,000 plus super, so about $101 a month less, and less super too. You'd need a package of about $112,001 to match.

What does a package including super mean?

Some employers quote a total package that includes the 12% super guarantee. Your salary is then the package divided by 1.12. Always check whether an offer is "plus super" or "including super" before comparing.

Does it matter which state the job is in?

Not for income tax, which is the same across Australia. Living costs, especially rent, differ a lot, so compare those separately.

What else should I compare besides pay?

Extra super above the 12% guarantee, salary packaging, bonuses, leave loading, flexibility and commuting costs.
