Lodging your return

  • Lodge by 31 October yourself through myGov, or later if you use a registered tax agent.
  • Your income statements in myGov show your salary and the tax withheld once your employer marks them “tax ready”.
  • Working from home at the fixed rate needs a record of the hours you actually worked from home.
Assumptions in this estimate
  • For an Australian resident for tax purposes, with no dependants: family thresholds for the Medicare levy and surcharge aren’t included.
  • Includes the low income tax offset. Other offsets, franking credits and capital gains aren’t included.

Frequently asked questions

How is my tax refund worked out?

Your taxable income is your income minus your deductions. Tax on it is worked out at the year's rates, less the low income tax offset, plus the 2% Medicare levy and any HELP repayment. If more tax was withheld from your pay than that, the difference comes back as a refund.

When is the deadline to lodge?

31 October if you lodge your own return. If you use a registered tax agent and are on their list by 31 October, you can usually lodge later, often up to 15 May the next year.

How much can I claim for working from home?

With the fixed rate method you claim 70 cents for every hour worked from home in 2025–26. It covers electricity, gas, phone, internet and stationery. You need a record of the hours you actually worked from home.

What is the $1,000 standard deduction?

From 2026–27, employees can claim a standard $1,000 deduction for work-related expenses without receipts, instead of listing them. If your expenses are more than $1,000, you can still claim them in full with records.

Why do I owe tax instead of getting a refund?

Often because of income with no tax withheld, such as interest, a second job or side income, or a HELP debt, where repayments are added to your tax at the end of the year.
