Your employer also pays $9,600 a year into your super.

Plus about $320 back at tax time from the new $1,000 standard deduction for work expenses (if you don’t claim more than that in actual expenses).

What this means

Of every extra $100 you earn, you’d take home about $68. The other 32% is your marginal rate: the rate on a raise, a bonus or overtime.

Across all your pay, only 20% goes to tax and deductions, because the first part of your income is taxed at lower rates. A raise never lowers your take-home pay overall.

Assumptions in this estimate
  • Tax is worked out for the full year and spread evenly across your pays; the ATO tax tables used for withholding can differ by a few dollars a pay.
  • The Medicare levy low-income threshold is the 2025–26 figure ($28,011), which the ATO also uses for 2026–27 withholding.
  • Assumes a single person with no dependants; family thresholds for the Medicare levy and surcharge are not included.

How your take-home pay is calculated

Your take-home pay is your salary minus:

  1. Salary sacrifice to super, if you make any. It comes out before tax, so it lowers your taxable income.
  2. Income tax at the 2026–27 rates, minus the low income tax offset (up to $700) if you earn less than $66,667.
  3. The Medicare levy of 2%, and the Medicare levy surcharge if you earn over $105,000 without private hospital cover.
  4. HELP repayments, if you have a study loan.

Your employer also pays 12% of your salary into your super fund. That money isn’t part of your take-home pay, but it’s yours for retirement.

Residents, foreign residents and working holiday makers

Foreign residents don’t get the tax-free threshold, the low income tax offset or the Medicare levy, and pay 30% from the first dollar. Working holiday makers pay 15% on income up to $45,000, then the resident rates.

About these estimates

The calculator works out your tax for the full year and spreads it evenly across your pays. The ATO tax tables your employer uses for each pay can differ by a few dollars, and the difference is settled when you lodge your tax return. Frequently asked questions

What are the tax rates for 2026–27?

For Australian residents, the first $18,200 is tax-free. You pay 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000 and 45% above that. The lowest rate fell from 16% to 15% on 1 July 2026.

How much is $80,000 after tax?

An Australian resident earning $80,000 takes home about $63,880 a year in 2026–27, or $2,457 a fortnight, after $14,520 income tax and a $1,600 Medicare levy. The employer also pays $9,600 super on top.

What is the Medicare levy?

Most residents pay a Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income. People on low incomes pay less or nothing. If you earn over $105,000 as a single and don't have private hospital cover, you also pay the Medicare levy surcharge of 1% to 1.5%.

How much HELP do I repay?

In 2026–27 you repay 15 cents for every dollar of income above $69,528, rising to 17 cents above $129,717. Above $186,050 you repay 10% of your whole income. Salary-sacrificed super counts as income for this.

Is super included in my salary?

Usually not. Your employer pays 12% super guarantee on top of your salary. If your job is advertised as a package "including super", choose that option and the calculator splits it into salary and super.
