The benefit is paid on the 20th of each month, tax-free. Below $38,237 of family income you get the full amount; above it, it shrinks gradually, so most families get something.

You must file a tax return every year, both of you if you have a partner, even with no income, or the payments stop.

How the calculator works

  1. Family net income: yours and your partner’s net income for 2025 (line 23600 of your returns).
  2. Children: how many are under 6, and how many are 6 to 17.
  3. Disability: children eligible for the disability tax credit also get the Child Disability Benefit.

How the reduction works

Below $38,237 of family income you get the full amount. Above it, the benefit shrinks by a share of each extra dollar:

Children Between $38,237 and $82,847 Above $82,847
1 7% 3.2%
2 13.5% 5.7%
3 19% 8%
4 or more 23% 9.5%

Provinces and territories pay their own child benefits on top, often with the same payment. See benefits and tax credits.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Canada Child Benefit?

Up to $8,157 a year ($679.75 a month) for each child under 6, and $6,883 ($573.58 a month) for each child aged 6 to 17, from July 2026 to June 2027. It’s reduced once family net income is over $38,237.

How much will I get on $60,000?

With one child under 6 and one aged 6 to 17, about $12,100 a year, or $1,008 a month. With one child under 6, about $6,600 a year.

When is it paid?

Usually on the 20th of each month, and earlier in December. It’s tax-free, so it doesn’t count as income on your tax return.

Why did my payment change in July?

The benefit year runs from July to June, based on your family income from the year before. Each July it’s worked out again from your latest tax returns, and the amounts rise with inflation.
