How the calculator works
- Your credit: $2,200 for each child under 17 and $500 for each other dependent, less $50 for each $1,000 of income over $200,000 ($400,000 if you’re married filing jointly).
- Off your tax: the credit first cuts your federal income tax, worked out with the standard deduction.
- Refunded: anything left is paid to you, up to $1,700 a child and 15% of your earnings over $2,500. That’s the additional child tax credit.
Examples
A married couple earning $80,000 with two children owe $5,240 of federal income tax before credits. Their $4,400 credit comes straight off it, leaving $840 to pay.
A head of household earning $30,000 with two children owes only $585 before credits. The credit wipes that out, and $3,400 more is refunded ($1,700 a child), for $3,985 in all. The last $415 can’t be used.
A single parent earning $230,000 with one child gets $700: the $2,200 credit falls by $1,500 because their income is $30,000 over the $200,000 threshold.

How much you get by income
A married couple filing jointly with 2 children under 17, with all their income from work, in 2026:
| Income | Off their tax | Refunded | Total credit |
|---|---|---|---|
| $15,000 | $0 | $1,875 | $1,875 |
| $25,000 | $0 | $3,375 | $3,375 |
| $40,000 | $780 | $3,400 | $4,180 |
| $60,000 | $2,840 | $1,560 | $4,400 |
| $80,000 | $4,400 | $0 | $4,400 |
| $150,000 | $4,400 | $0 | $4,400 |
| $400,000 | $4,400 | $0 | $4,400 |
| $440,000 | $2,400 | $0 | $2,400 |
| $480,000 | $400 | $0 | $400 |
At low incomes, the refund is limited to 15% of earnings over $2,500, so the credit grows as you earn more until it reaches the full amount. It stays there until the phase-out, which for a married couple starts at $400,000.
