Assumptions in this estimate
  • Take-home pay assumes a single person with no pension, retirement or other pre-tax deductions.
  • Assumes wages are your only income and you take the standard deduction.
  • Federal tax is your estimated annual liability spread evenly across paychecks; your employer’s withholding (based on your W-4) can differ.
  • Includes the 2025–2028 deductions for overtime (when you enter hourly pay over 40 hours a week, the extra half of time-and-a-half) and for people 65 or older. The tips and car-loan interest deductions are not included.
  • The earned income credit assumes the children you enter are qualifying children and that you have no investment income over $12,200; married people filing separately are treated as not eligible.
  • The $500 credit for other dependents (for example, children 17 or older) is not included.
  • Additional Medicare Tax is shown as what you owe for the year. Employers withhold it on wages over $200,000 whatever your filing status, so your paychecks can differ.
  • The 65+ option assumes you are not enrolled in Medicare: once you are, you can no longer contribute to an HSA.
  • California taxes HSA contributions, so they are added back to state income.
  • Exemption credits shrink at high incomes; the 2026 phase-out thresholds aren’t published until December, so the 2025 thresholds are used.

How the calculator works

  1. Yearly pay before tax: your hourly rate × hours a week × weeks a year, plus overtime hours at 1.5× your rate.
  2. Take-home pay: we run that yearly pay through the same federal, state and payroll tax rules as our paycheck calculator, for a single filer with no pre-tax deductions.

For 401(k) contributions, health premiums, children or a different filing status, use the paycheck calculator, which also accepts hourly pay.

Overtime

Most hourly employees get at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a week. At $25 an hour, 5 hours of overtime a week every week adds $187.50 a week, or $9,750 a year, to the $52,000 from a 40-hour week.

From 2025 to 2028, the extra half of overtime pay can also be deducted from federal taxable income, which this calculator includes. See the no tax on overtime calculator.

Salary to hourly

To turn a salary into an hourly rate, divide it by the hours you work in a year. Full-time at 40 hours a week, that’s 2,080 hours:

Salary Hourly rate
$40,000 $19.23
$50,000 $24.04
$60,000 $28.85
$75,000 $36.06
$100,000 $48.08

Useful when comparing an hourly job with a salaried one. The job offer calculator compares two offers after tax, including benefits.

Part-time and unpaid time off

Working fewer hours, or taking unpaid weeks off, lowers your yearly pay: change the hours a week or the weeks a year in the calculator. Two weeks of unpaid vacation means 50 weeks of pay. If your vacation and holidays are paid, keep it at 52.

Tips count as income too: see the no tax on tips calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?

Multiply your hourly wage by the hours you work each week, then by the weeks you work each year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, that's 2,080 hours, so $25 an hour is $25 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year before tax.

How is overtime paid?

Under federal law, most hourly employees get at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a week. Enter your overtime hours separately and the calculator pays them at 1.5×. From 2025 to 2028, the extra half of that overtime pay can also be deducted from federal taxable income, which this calculator includes.

What if I take unpaid time off?

Lower the weeks a year. For example, two weeks of unpaid vacation means 50 weeks of pay. If your vacation and holidays are paid, keep it at 52.

How much is $20 an hour a year?

Working 40 hours a week all year, $20 an hour is $41,600 a year, $3,467 a month or $1,600 every two weeks before tax.

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the yearly salary by the hours you work in a year. For a full-time job of 40 hours a week, that's 2,080 hours, so $60,000 a year is about $28.85 an hour.
