Assumptions in this estimate
  • Take-home pay assumes a single person with no pension, retirement or other pre-tax deductions.
  • Assumes the standard 1257L tax code and a full year in the same job.
  • National Insurance is worked out for each pay period; this estimate works it out for the year, which can differ by a few pounds.
  • Pension contributions are a percentage of your full salary; some workplace schemes use qualifying earnings (£6,240 to £50,270) instead.
  • Marriage Allowance, Blind Person’s Allowance and the High Income Child Benefit Charge are not included.
  • You can choose one undergraduate student loan plan (plus a postgraduate loan). With more than one plan, you repay 9% of earnings above the lowest threshold.
  • Above £100,000 the figures are your yearly tax bill with the Personal Allowance reduced; on a 1257L code your payslips may take less until HMRC updates your code.

How the calculator works

  1. Annual pay before tax: your hourly rate × hours a week × weeks a year, plus overtime hours at 1.5× your rate.
  2. Take-home pay: we run that annual pay through the same Income Tax and National Insurance rules as our salary calculator, with Scottish rates if you live in Scotland.

For pension contributions or a student loan, use the salary calculator, which also accepts hourly pay.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by 52. A typical UK full-time week is 37.5 hours, or 1,950 hours a year, so £15 an hour is £15 × 1,950 = £29,250 a year before tax.

Is overtime paid at time and a half in the UK?

There's no legal right to extra pay for overtime in the UK; it depends on your contract. Many employers pay 1.5 times the normal rate. Enter your overtime hours and the calculator pays them at 1.5×. Your average pay for all hours must still be at least the National Minimum Wage.

Does the annual figure include holiday pay?

Yes, if you're paid for your holidays. Most UK workers get 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year, so keep weeks a year at 52. Lower it only for unpaid time off.

How much is £12 an hour a year?

At 37.5 hours a week, £12 an hour is £23,400 a year, £1,950 a month or £450 a week before tax.
