When the 1st falls on a weekend, SSI comes at the end of the month before. That’s the payment for the next month, not an extra one: there’s no SSI payment in the month that follows.
The 2027 increase
Payments rise by 3.6% in 2027, starting with the January 2027 payments. For SSI, the increase starts with the payment on December 31, 2026, and the most SSI pays becomes $1,029 a month for one person and $1,544 for a couple.
What the increase adds
| Monthly benefit in 2026 | From January 2027 | A year more |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | $1,036 | $432 |
| $1,500 | $1,554 | $648 |
| $2,000 | $2,072 | $864 |
| $2,500 | $2,590 | $1,080 |
| $3,000 | $3,108 | $1,296 |
Social Security rounds each benefit down to the dollar, so your new amount may be up to a dollar lower.
What comes out of your payment
- Medicare Part B: if you’re enrolled, the premium is usually taken from your Social Security before it’s paid. The standard premium is $202.90 a month in 2026, and higher incomes pay more: see the IRMAA calculator. The 2027 premium is announced in November, so part of the increase may go on it.
- Federal income tax, if you ask for it. Up to 85% of your benefits can be taxed, depending on your other income. To have tax withheld, give Social Security Form W-4V and choose 7%, 10%, 12% or 22%. The Social Security tax calculator shows whether you’ll owe.
