For fortnightly payments. Your own payment day is in myGov or the Express Plus Centrelink app.
Services Australia service centres are closed on the public holidays. You can still report and manage your payments online through myGov and the Express Plus Centrelink app.
Your usual payment day
Most Centrelink payments are paid fortnightly, on a day set by your customer reference number, so there isn’t one date for everyone. Check your payment day in myGov or the app.
Reporting your income
If you report your income each fortnight, your reporting date may also move earlier over the holidays. Services Australia lets you know in myGov or the app. Report on time, or your payment may be late.
Plan for January
An early payment in December is the same fortnight’s money, paid sooner. Your next payment comes on its normal day, so you wait longer: 15 days if your payment was due on 25 December or 1 January, and 18 days if it was due on 28 December.
An 18-day wait means making a fortnight’s payment last about 30% longer. A few ways to manage it:
- Put the early payment aside for January’s rent and bills before spending on Christmas.
- Pay big bills first, and ask your energy or phone provider for a payment plan if a bill lands in the gap.
- Check whether you can get an advance: some payments let you get part of a future payment early, repaid from later payments.
Make a budget for the gap. If money is tight, the free National Debt Helpline (1800 007 007) and our free money help page can help.
Watch out for Christmas scams
There’s no regular Centrelink Christmas bonus. Texts and emails offering one, or asking you to log in through a link to receive a payment, are scams. myGov won’t send you a link to sign in: open the app or type the address yourself. See how to spot money scams, and report scams to Scamwatch.
